About Six Degrees of Scripture

Six Degrees of Scripture is a race through the relationships of the Bible. You are given a starting figure and a target figure, and you get from one to the other by following labelled connections such as "father of", "married", "mentored" and "killed".

The game quietly teaches how the people of the Bible fit together: family lines, mentors and apprentices, kings and prophets. Players discover, for example, how Ruth is connected to David, and the shortest route is often not the obvious one.

Ages
Roughly Year 6 and up. It suits students who already know some Bible people and want to see how they connect.
Group size
Solo, or up to 30 players in a room, all racing the same pair of figures.
Round length
A few minutes per round. The first player to reach the target wins.

Tips for teachers and leaders

  • Work through one pair together on the board first, such as Ruth to David. Naming each link out loud shows students how to think in family lines.
  • Ask students to explain their route afterwards. The results screen shows each player's full chain, which makes a good talking point about who connects whom.
  • Use it alongside a unit on a family line, like the ancestors of Jesus, to reinforce names students have just met.
  • Remind students that the faded figures show the next step, so looking ahead stops them walking away from the target.

Ways to vary it

  • Fewest moves: after the round, compare chains and see whose route was shortest.
  • Pairs challenge: two students share one device and agree each move before clicking.
  • Predict first: before starting, students write down the route they expect, then check it against the game.
