About Word Nerd

Word Nerd tests real Hebrew and Greek words from the Bible. A word appears with several possible meanings, and you pick the right one before the timer runs out.

It is harder than the other games, so it suits older students and adults with some Bible background. It is a gentle way to build a feel for the original languages behind the English text, without needing to read Hebrew or Greek script fluently.

Ages
Best for Year 9 and up, plus adults. Start on Easy if the original languages are new to the group.
Group size
Solo, or up to 30 players in a room.
Round length
From about 2 minutes for 5 questions to 8-10 minutes for 20, depending on the timer.

Tips for teachers and leaders

  • Use it with senior students or a Bible study group who are curious about how translation works.
  • Teach the elimination strategy: rule out the meanings that clearly don't fit, then choose from what is left.
  • After a round, pick one word and discuss where it appears in Scripture and how it is translated into English.
  • Start on Easy, and move to Hard once the common words feel familiar.

Ways to vary it

  • Word of the day: pick one word from a round and have students find a verse where it appears.
  • Team round: small groups agree on an answer together before tapping.
  • Personal best: play solo and try to improve a saved score over a week.
